Incident Report: Management Plane Outage

On July 9, 2026, LocalXpose experienced a service disruption in its Management Plane due to an unexpected shutdown of the service and database server.

On July 9, 2026, LocalXpose experienced a service disruption to our Management Plane. The Management Plane is responsible for authentication and authorisation and management of tunnel resources in US, EU and AP regions. Following an unexpected hardware restart initiated by our infrastructure provider, our service was impacted. This restart also affected our database which is currently a single point of failure in our infrastructure. Due to a configuration limitation that affected the cluster’s automatic recovery process, the system did not restart automatically. This resulted in a temporary service interruption for affected customers.

  • Affected Users: A subset of users on Basic and PRO plans in the US, EU and AP regions who wanted to log in to the dashboard, create, update or delete their tunnels.
  • Non-Affected Users: Basic and PRO plan customers with established tunnels in US, EU and AP regions. Enterprise customers with dedicated instances remained stable.
  • Resolution: After the root cause was identified, we restarted the cluster and the Management Plane came back online, which restored service for our users immediately.

Timeline of Events

July 9, 2026

  • 07:57 UTC: Hardware node shut down for security update by cloud provider
  • 08:43 UTC: Hardware node back online but can not register to cluster
  • 11:15 UTC: Team becomes aware of downtime and starts investigating
  • 11:30 UTC: Management Plane service and database restarted manually
  • 11:32 UTC: Service fully restored

User Impact & Recovery

The Management Plane was completely unavailable which stopped customers from authenticating and from managing their tunnels (e.g. establishing new tunnels, deleting existing ones, etc). Customers with already established tunnels were not affected.

  • Recovery Times: Individual experiences varied. However the Management Plane was unavailable for 3 hours and 35 minutes.

Our Response & Future Prevention

CategoryActions Taken & Planned
Immediate ActionsRestarted Management Plane service and database and manually monitored the restore. We have communicated with our infrastructure provider to improve our coordination and ensure better stability for future maintenance windows.
InfrastructureWe started building new, more resilient infrastructure to avoid the known shortcomings of the system. We will increase the priority of this work to accelerate the migration.
MonitoringImproving alerting escalation to reduce time to response of our team.
